The Foundational Principles of Calvary Chapel

Please read & INITIAL each distinctive IF you agree.

PLEASE DO NOT INITIAL if you disagree. Please talk to us if you disagree.

God's Model For The Church

In Calvary Chapels, we look to the book of Acts as the model for the church. It is a church filled with the Holy Spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The four basic functions of the early church are found in Acts 2:42, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

Church Government

Church government typically is found in 3 basic forms: rule by a bishop or overseer (episkopos); a board of elders (presbyteros); and congregational rule. In Calvary Chapel, we believe that the senior pastor is ruled by the Lord and aided by the Board of Directors to discover the mind and will of Jesus Christ for His church. Complementing the senior pastor are the assisting pastors, who minister to the spiritual needs of the congregation on a daily basis.

Empowered By The Spirit

We believe that there is an experience of the empowering of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer that is distinct and separate from the indwelling of the Spirit that takes place at conversion. We acknowledge a three–fold relationship between the Holy Spirit and the believer: “para” – coming alongside; “en” – in you; and “epi” – an overflow.

Building The Church God's Way

At Calvary Chapel, we have a relaxed, casual style. We don’t get involved in a lot of spiritual hype. We don’t try to motivate people carnally, and we are not apt to shout at the congregation. We simply trust in the work of the Holy Spirit, and of Jesus Christ who is building His church as He said He would.

Grace Upon Grace

We realize that without the grace of God, none of us would have a chance. We need the grace of God in our lives daily. We believe in the love and grace that seeks to restore the fallen.

The Priority Of The Word

We endeavor to declare to people the whole counsel of God. The teaching ministry of Calvary Chapel is expositional (verse by verse/chapter by chapter) in nature. We read the word, give the sense of the word and cause people to understand the meaning of the word.

The Centrality Of Jesus Christ

Another characteristic of Calvary Chapel is the centrality of Jesus in our worship. We don’t allow any practice or behavior during our services that would distract people from focusing on Him.

The Rapture Of The Church

We believe that Jesus Christ will come for His church (a biblical event known as the
"Rapture"). Then a seven-year period which the Bible calls, "The Great Tribulation" will begin, followed by the Second Coming of Jesus to the earth and the Millennial (1,000 year) reign of Christ upon the earth.

Alcohol Policy

We’re thankful for each of you and wanted to take an opportunity to share our hearts and church policy when it comes to alcohol consumption (especially for those of you considering serving in one of our ministry opportunities here at the church).

Biblically, drinking alcohol is not a sin (as long as it is consumed in moderation and does not lead to an addiction or the stumbling of another person). We believe there is “freedom in Christ” for each of you to make a decision as to whether or not to consume alcohol in small quantities.

However, there are some clear guidelines in the Scriptures worth considering:

1.) “Drunkenness” is a sin and should be avoided at all costs (Ephesians 5:18).

2.) Christians should not allow their bodies to be “mastered” by anything (1 Corinthians 6:12; 2 Peter 2:19).

3.) The Bible gives strong warning against excessive drinking and its crushing effects (Proverbs 23:20-35).

4.) Christians are also encouraged not to consume any food or drink that might “stumble” another believer or cause them to sin against their conscience (Romans 14:20-21; 1 Corinthians 8:9-13).

5.) The biblical qualifications for “church leadership” also give specific exhortations against the excessive consumption of alcohol (1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:6-9).

Based on these biblical concerns regarding alcohol consumption and its potentially addictive and stumbling nature (and based on my personal testimony and the effects I’ve witnessed in the lives of others) we would encourage many believers in many instances to prayerfully consider abstaining from alcohol altogether.

As far as an official policy at Calvary Chapel Buffalo:

● We require “Church Staff,” “Elders,” and “Ministry Directors/Overseers” to completely abstain from alcohol. In doing so we are seeking to be set apart, and to honor the Lord by living our lives “above reproach” (Titus 1:7) and also seeking to “abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thess 5:22).

● We do not require volunteers serving in ministries to abstain from alcohol.
However, if you are serving in a ministry here at the church, we would ask that you exercise wisdom and make sure that you are not drinking in excess or living in such a way as to stumble others. Additionally, we would request that you be mindful of social media posts containing alcohol (especially if you’re serving with youth or children). If a child saw you consuming alcohol in public or online, consider the seeds being planted as a person of influence and Biblical leadership in that child’s life. Our actions could be used to justify another’s continued or future sin, and because of our love for you and the children we are responsible for here, we want to be good examples and above reproach in all things.

● We also do not allow any alcohol consumption at church sponsored events, small groups, meetings or activities.

Thank you for letting us share our hearts in these matters! Please feel free to reach out with any questions at all.

With Love and In Christ,
Pastor Zach Grimm
